Department Responsible: Center for Social Concern

Collaborators: University Communications

Goal: Create an identity and stylesheet for Hopkins Votes, an ongoing initiative that provides resources and guidance to help JHU students and employees participate in the democratic process.

Deliverables & Design Thinking: Launched in 2018 by the Center for Social Concern with ongoing support from University Communications.

  • Campaign look and feel (scalable year-over-year for use across the institution with an accompanying stylesheet detailing usage guidelines for graphics, red and blue used for equal representation)
  • Social media assets (including GIFs, stickers, and other templates)
  • Giveaways (sticker sheets, t-shirts, and other promotional items to help spread the word about the campaign and get people registered to vote)
  • Temporary signage (lawn signs to promote events, flags, pop-up banners, background and props for photo booth)

Outcome: Following the first year of the Hopkins Votes campaign, the voting rate among all JHU students increased from 14.4% in 2014 to 44.8% in 2018. The initiative was recognized with multiple awards including the Best in Class award for the most-improved voting rate at a large, private institution by All-In Democracy Challenge.
