Pop-Up Ice Rink at Homewood
Hoppin’ in a Winter Wonderland
Johns Hopkins University opens a campus ice rink during the winter season, transforming a section of the Homewood Campus into a 6,000-square-foot skating surface that is free to all.
Department Responsible: Facilities and Real Estate
Collaborators: University Communications
Goal: Create a memorable experience at the pop-up ice rink for students, staff, and the surrounding community.
Deliverables & Design Thinking: For its initial launch in 2022, a full event identity and promotional package were needed. In the years since University Communications supports subtle updates to the environmental graphics and event promotion assets.
- Event identity (featuring imagery of Jay, our mascot, and winter wonderland graphics, paired with fun phrases like “Birds of a feather, skate together”)
- Environmental graphics and signage
- Giveaways (purposeful selection of promotional items relevant to the ice rink, like gloves, hats, and scarves)
- Reveal video
- Website landing page
- HUB coverage
- Social media promotion (including sharable GIFs connected to the environmental branding graphics)
Outcome: The inaugural pop-up ice rink welcomed over 11,000 university affiliates and community members on the ice.
