Athletics

The official Johns Hopkins Athletics marks contribute to and enhance an intercollegiate athletics program that is among the most successful in the nation.

The Johns Hopkins University athletic trademarks are reserved for use by the Department of Athletics. Use is prohibited in communications that promote non-athletic activities and entities.

Athletics Logo

The Johns Hopkins Athletics logo combines the shield shape with our official rendering of the Blue Jay. The wordmark deliberately departs from the standard University logo architecture to meet the unique needs of uniforms and merchandise. The Athletics shield and wordmark can be used independently from each other.

Usage

Color

Athletics colors are Spirit Blue (PMS 284), white, and black. A full-color version of a logo is preferred. When budget, printing restrictions, or design needs prevent color usage, the one-color black or one-color white versions are acceptable. Do not attempt to reverse the black logo to achieve the white logo; doing so will result in an incorrect reproduction.

Size

The minimum size for this logo on print materials is 0.3 inches wide; for digital materials it is 35 pixels wide. The Athletics Logo is available in both a small and large version. The large version is the default, and the small version has streamlined details optimized for merchandise imprint areas smaller than two inches and for embroidery.

Background

The logo must always be legible. With the exception of white logos, all official sports logos are created with a white border around the outside perimeter. This allows for clean placement on most backgrounds.

Athletic Logo Lock-ups

Like the primary logo architecture considerations for departments and centers, there is a lock-up variation of the Athletics logo unique to each sport for use on team-specific merchandise and materials. Approved lock-ups are available for:

  • Office, facility, and recreation
  • Blue Jays Unlimited
  • Teams
  • Club sports

Athletic marks

The following marks are strictly reserved for JHU Athletics. For graphics that can be used institution-wide to support brand affinity, please refer to our Spirit Marks.

Athletics Shield Mark

Where the Blue Jay is considered a spirit mark for institution-wide use, when framed in the shield, the Blue Jay represents Hopkins Athletics. When using the shield independently, it should be centered in your design based on the center of the shield itself, rather than including the extension of the Blue Jay’s beak.

Jays Hand-Lettering

The Jays hand-lettering was created in the late 1970s for Hopkins helmets and was refined in 2008 for men’s lacrosse. It has not changed since then. To preserve the vintage exclusivity of this unique graphic, use is restricted to select athletic items and commercially sold merchandise.

Vintage Jay Illustrations

The Historic NAG Jay was first created in 1966, by Neil Albert Grauer (NAG) while an undergraduate at Johns Hopkins University. Since then, the NAG Jay has been used by the university in many capacities. In 2017, a complete set of NAG Jays (one for each sport) was drawn by its original creator, creating the full athletic catalog of official NAG Jays.
